The Bronx Casket Co. / Sargträger DD Verni
(Interview in english can be read here)
Da ist wirklich was ganz Eigenes entstanden.
Was will man mehr??
DD Verni: Danke an Rocktimes!
RockTimes: You are the Bassplayer for Thrash heroes 'Overkill' and also their main songwriter. What was the reason to start 'The Bronx Casket Co.' back in 1998? Was it that you don't feel fully occupied with your main band?
DD Verni: Mostly for fun and experimenting. In Bronx Casket I get to try out alot of different things I never get to do with Overkill, also to be able to write the lyrics and melodies is great fun. I played a buch of guitar and sang about half the songs too, so it really is a chance to try out new things.
RockTimes: Who came up with the name for the band? And does the name have a special meaning to you?
DD Verni: I came up with the name, but no special meaning I just thought it sounded cool.
RockTimes: Meanwhile, Hellectric is your third album and there are no line-up changes so far. All the other members are also workin' in other bands and projects. But after three albums, would you still call it a side-project?
DD Verni: I think it's a band. It has it's own identity now and we will be doing some shows soon, so I think it has really come into its own.
RockTimes: For your debut album, as well as for 'Sweet home Transylvania' it was you who wrote all the songs and lyrics. So I guess things haven't changed with the new album?
Are you responsible for the production as well?
DD Verni: Yes I did all the writing for this record too, but I also produced the 2 earlier Bronx Casket Co records as well. That is also a fun and challenging part of doing these albums.
RockTimes: With Overkill you're holding the Thrash Metal flag-up high. Because of the darker atmosphere I would describe the sound of The Bronx Casket Co. as Doom Metal or Gothic Metal. Am I right?
DD Verni: Yes I think so, somewhere in there
RockTimes: You are the main songwriter in both of your bands. Musically, do you divide strictly between Overkill and TBCC? I mean, do the songs that don't really fit Overkill go over to The Bronx Casket Co. , or do you know right away while writing a song, what band it will go to?
DD Verni: Oh it's clear right away. Overkill is all about rhythm and aggression musically, and Blitz does all the lyrics for Overkill so they are very different from Bronx Casket. Bronx is more about melody and atmosphere than Overkill is , so it's easy to see what music can be used for which band.
RockTimes: Do the lyrics have a special concept, that's floating through all the songs of the new album?
DD Verni: No all the songs lyrically are about different subject although I always try and title a song to fit in with the theme of the band, even if it about something not so straightforward to the title.
RockTimes: You recorded the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic 'Freebird' in a gothic version. And because I'm a Skynyrd fan, I was really curious how your new album will sound. How did you come up with that idea? By the way, I think your version is great. The original was (and still is) played so often and everywhere, that it's almost getting too much. Now, with your version, it's definately fun again to listen to.
DD Verni: I like doing covers, and this was one I just felt I had a cool version of so I went for it. I am glad you liked it most people seem to, although they are taken back at first.
RockTimes: What kind of reactions did you get for 'Hellectric' so far?
DD Verni: So far it has been great!! The reviews have been good and the fans seem to like it so what more can you ask than that.
RockTimes: How do you deal with bad reviews? I'm not talkin' about ours, 'cos it will be positive. But when do you reach the point, that you think 'THAT'S TOO MUCH!!!'??
DD Verni: Reviews are meaningless, only what the kids say really matters
RockTimes: With 'Hellectric' you are with a new label -- Regain Records. Would you mind tellin' us the reason for the change?
DD Verni: Overkill went over to Regain and it just seemed to make sense to have Bronx Casket over there as well
RockTimes: As I mentioned before, all the members of The Bronx Casket Co. are involved in several other bands. How hard is it to get everybody together to record an album? Timewise, that is.
DD Verni: It is usually a challenge, but I have all the material written before we go to the studio so it is not as difficult as it seems with everyone's schedule.
RockTimes: If The Bronx Casket Co. would reach the same success as Overkill, would you ever consider to put Overkill to the side and put your main attention on this band?
DD Verni: No.
RockTimes: In Overkill, as well as in TBCC you're playing the bass. Do you use the same (Bass-) guitar?
DD Verni: actually for this record I used a different one that I borrowed from Overkill's guitarist Derek
RockTimes: With three albums behind you, don't you think it would be about time to play a big tour in Europe? Any plans for that and did you get any offers so far?
DD Verni: I would love to get over there, we are talking about a bunch of things now, so maybe something cool will come along and we will be able to do it.
RockTimes: The CD-cover fits very well to the music, kind of dark. And I think I recognised a coffin on it. Who is actually responsible for the cover artwork?
DD Verni: Gery Nible, he did all the art for the last 2 cd's as well as Travis Smith who contributed some stuff as well.
RockTimes: Okay, I got one last question: What does the D.D. stand for in your name? 'Cos that's not your real name, right?
DD Verni: Drop Dead........ and no it's not my real name
RockTimes: D.D., thank you very much for your patience. For the future, we wish you and the other guys in the band all the best.
DD Verni: Thanks RockTimes.
