ROCKTIMES - Interview mit Wojtek Szadkowski und Robin von Strawberry Fields

RockTimes: Hi Wojtek, kurz vor VÖ der Satellite-CD, "Nostalgia", gibt es das neue Projekt Strawberry Fields, welches sehr gut von uns bewertet wurde. Was ist der Grund, fast zeitgleich zwei neue Alben zu veröffentlichen?
Wojtek: Du kannst dir kaum vorstellen, wie viel ich komponiere. Aus Mangel an Zeit komme ich allerdings nicht dazu, da jedes Mal eine CD zu veröffentlichen. Letztes Jahr habe ich mir zu Hause ein kleines Studio eingerichtet, um Zeit und Arbeit besser unter einen Hut zu bringen. Ich war der Meinung all meine Ideen mit Satellite zu verwirklichen und in der Tat kann ich dort auch sehr viel umsetzen. Aber für die Musik, die es auf Strawberry Fields-Debüt zu hören gibt, war eine neue Band notwendig. Die Kompositionen sind songorientierter und der Gesang steht im Vordergrund. Daher entschied ich mich, an zwei Platten gleichzeitig zu arbeiten. Das heißt, zu dieser Zeit arbeitete ich außerdem an Songs für weitere, neue Projekte.

RockTimes: Mit Robin gibt es eine großartige Sängerin bei Strawberry Fields, was den Schluss nahelegt, dass die neue Band gegründet wurde, um ihrem Gesang gerecht zu werden, da Satellite doch eher auf männlichen Gesang ausgerichtet ist. Ist das so?
Wojtek: Ja und Nein. Strawberry Fields wurde sicherlich für Robin ins Leben gerufen - alles ist beeinflusst durch ihre Stimme. Ich schrieb einige neue Sachen für mein neues Projekt. Aber als ich Robin hörte verwarf ich alles wieder und kreierte neue Tunes. Und es ist auch richtig, dass ich mir bei Satellite keinen weiblichen Gesang vorstellen kann. Strawberry Fields ist aber auch nicht Satellite mit Sängerin. Die Musik ist komplett anders.

RockTimes: Ja, meine letzte Frage kam ja auch auf, weil meiner Meinung nach die Musik von Strawberry Fields perfekt zu Robins Stimme passt. Was war eigentlich zuerst da: Der instrumentelle Teil oder die Texte, bzw. die Melodien zu den Texten?
Wojtek: Erst die Musik und von dieser inspiriert schrieb dann Robin die Texte. Bei mir geschieht das gleichzeitig. Musik und Texte entstehen gemeinsam.

RockTimes: Dürfen wir auf mehr von Strawberry Fields hoffen?
Robin: Ja, möglicherweise gibt es nächstes Jahr ein neuen Album.

RockTimes: Wojtek, du bist ein sehr beschäftigter Musiker... würde dir etwas fehlen, wenn du nur eine Band hättest? Oder wärst du nicht genug gefordert?
Wojtek: Ich habe einfach zu viele Ideen im Kopf und es wäre schade, wenn die verloren gingen. Ich bin sehr kreativ, ja Musik macht mich so an, dass man sagen kann, ich bin in ihr gefangen und kann nicht flüchten. Es ist keine Frage von neuen Herausforderungen oder mir etwas beweisen zu müssen.

RockTimes: Die Musiker bei Strawberry Fields sind bis auf Robert die gleichen, wie bei Satellite. Obwohl der Stil anders ist, wolltest du das bewährte Strawberry Fields Line-up um dich haben, anstatt die Band komplett neu zu besetzen?
Wojtek: Eigentlich wollte ich ein neues Line-up. Aber die Jungs von Satellite sind dermaßen flexibel, dass sie bei Starwberry Field wie ein solches klingen. Wir sind ein perfektes Team. Als letztes Mitglied kam Krzysiek Palczewski. Normalerweise bin ich am Keyboard, aber wir suchten jemanden für die Shows. Während des Mixes stellte sich heraus, dass Krzysiek die Songs liebte. Ich bot ihm an, doch auch ein paar Keyboardpassagen für die Platte einzuspielen. Nun ist er Bandmitglied.

RockTimes: Robin, dein richtiger Name lautet Marta. Wie kam es zu Robin?
Robin: Nicknames gefallen mir. Und Robin war mein Nick bei Chats im Internet. Es ist aber so, dass mir Nicks nicht nur gefallen, sondern ich mich auch sicher fühlte, weil Robin ja nicht unbedingt der Name einer Frau sein muss. Daher wurde ich auch überwiegend von unmoralischen Angeboten verschont.

RockTimes: Weder Robin noch Marta Kniewska waren mir vor Starwberry Fields ein Begriff, was aber nichts bedeutet, denn mit der polnischen Musikszene bin ich kaum vertraut. Daher die Frage: Ist Strawberry Fields deine erste Band?
Robin: Früher hatte ich eine Rockband, die allerdings nur begrenzt lokal eine Rolle spielte. Eine Platte habe ich nie aufgenommen, so dass "Rivers Gone Dry" mein Debüt ist. Auch die Studioarbeit war neu für mich und ich fand und finde das alles sehr spannend.

RockTimes: Bis auf "Fool" und "Open Your Eyes", die Wojtek mit dir zusammen geschrieben hat, stammen alle Texte von dir. Ist das ein weiteres Talent, neben deiner umwerfenden Stimme?
Robin: Oh Danke, du bist sehr nett

Nun ja, ich will und kann meine Texte nicht mit denen Wojteks vergleichen. Muss ich ja auch nicht. Mir gefällt es einfach, dass ich meinen Gefühlen nicht nur über meine Stimme und der Melodie, sondern auch durch die Texte Ausdruck verleihen kann. Die kommen nämlich vom Herzen und somit haben die Stücke auch etwas von mir, ja sind Teil von mir.

RockTimes: Hast du eine Gesangsausbildung genossen?
Robin: Ich hatte etwas Unterricht, ja. Aber nie eine Gesangsschule besucht. Ich singe auch freier und besser, wenn ich nicht dauernd an die Regeln, die man bei einer professionellen Ausbildung lernt, denken muss. Ich singe, was ich fühle.

RockTimes: Wird Strawberry Fields auch touren und wenn, auch in Deutschland?
Robin: Das wollen wir auf jeden Fall. Und ich hoffe, dich in Deutschland zu treffen

RockTimes: Hi Wojtek, just before the release of the new Satellite-CD, "Nostalgia", you came with your new project Strawberry Fields which received a very good review in our Magazine. How does it come to publish two new CDs almost at the same time?
Wojtek: I compose a lot more music than you can imagine. But usually due to the lack of time I am not able to release it as a CD. Last Year I set up some mini studio at my home what gave me more time an opportunity to work. I thought that Satellite would guarantee the unlimited development of my ideas but I was wrong. I can use wide range of musical tools in Satellite but to make music you can listen on Strawberry Fields debut album I just had to create another band. Those tunes demanded different attitude. Compositions are more songs oriented and vocal plays the main part there. So I decided to work on two albums symultaneousely. Actually at the same time I also composed a lot songs for some new projects.

RockTimes: With Robin you have a great female singer in the new project. Has Strawberry Fields probably been founded since the music of Satellite is more meant for male vocals?
Wojtek: Yes and No. Strawberry Fields was created for Robin, and all music is influenced by her voice. I composed some tracks for my new project but when I met and heard Robin all those songs were rejected. New melodies started to appear. But this is true that I can hardly imagine a female singer in Satellite. But Strawberry Fields is not Satellite with female vocal. This is completely diffrent music.

RockTimes: My previous question is because in my opinion the music of Strawberry Fields fits perfect around Robins voice. What was first, the instrumental part or the lyrics respectively the melody of the lyrics?
Wojtek: Music was the first and then Robin wrote all lyric inspired by it. I always compose music with the vocal line melody simultaneously.

RockTimes: Can we expect more from the Strawberry Fields Line-up in the future?
Robin: Yes. Probably new album next year.
Wojtek: I agree. I already started to work on new songs.

RockTimes: Wojtek, You are a busy musician or better: Are you unchallenged just having one band?
Wojtek: I just have too many musical Ideas to let them be lost. I am a very creative guy. I am attacked by music and cant resist it. I am the prisoner of music. I cannot escape. It is not a matter of any challenge or proving anything.

RockTimes: The musicians of Strawberry Fields are, except Robert, identically with Satellite. Despite changing the style a little, did you rather want to have that well-attuned team around than spending Strawberry Fields a complete new line-up?
Wojtek: Initially my idea was to complete a new line up. But those guys from Satellite are so flexible that they act as a totally new fresh line up in the context of a new project. We understand each other perfectly. The last person to join the line up was Krzysiek Palczewski. I played the keyboards and we needed someone only to play them live. But during the mix Krzysiek liked the music so much that I asked him to contribute a bit and he played a few keyboardsparts on the record too. Now he is a member.

RockTimes: Robin, your real name is Marta. How has it come to Robin?
Robin: I like the idea of nicknames. I used to have a group of friends with whom I chatted on the Internet. I used the nickname Robin. Firstly, I liked it. Secondly, I felt safe with the ambiguity of the name, as I could be sure (at least to some extent) that no one would talk me down with an immoral proposal, what is very common in the chat rooms. Then I got used to the name.

RockTimes: I haven't heard either the Name Robin nor Marta Kniewska before (but that does not mean much since I'm not big in the Polish music-scene). Is Strawberry Fields your first music project?
Robin: When I was younger I used to have a rock band but it was known rather locally. I've never recorded an album before. "Rivers Gone Dry" is my debut album. Also my first experience in the studio. I'm excited about it all.

RockTimes: Except "Fool" and "Open Your Eyes" where Wojtek was the co-writer, all lyrics were written by you. Is that another talent of you beside your gorgeous voice?
Robin: Your're very kind. Thank you

Of course, I cannot compare my lyrics to the lyrics that Wojtek writes but I don't think I have to. I'm just happy I can express my emotions not only with the melody and with my voice but also with the words that come from my heart. In that way all songs have more sense to me and they are a part of me.

RockTimes: Do you have a singer education?
Robin: I've had some singing classes but I've never attended any school where I could learn singing. In fact, I sing better when I don't think about all those rules of professional singing but when I feel what I sing.

RockTimes: Will Strawberry Fields be a tour-project as well and if so, can we expect to see you in Germany?
Robin: We will certainly be touring. Hope to see you in Germany
